Finding similarities and differences in stories

Dear Phoenix,

During our comparisons of stories, you were very good at finding what was the same and different between stories. You noticed different endings and different images of characters. Here you are comparing some versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Writing: Before & After

Dear Phoenix,

You have made a lot of progress in writing this year. Here is a sample of your work from September:

This piece and your other works shows that you knew that writing was different from drawing but used drawings and images to express your ideas. Here is a sample of your work from April:

This work shows that you can write most beginning sounds and some other sounds using your knowledge of letter-sound connections.

Congratulations on your progress Phoenix! You have worked hard on your writing.

Investigating the 'Form' of a Circle

Dear Phoenix,

When we looked back on all of your work and participation in our shapes inquiry, you selected your work about circles in your journal as your best piece. You explained: "I had good ideas. I said a circle was like a lid and I know it's also like a button." I agree that this piece is an example of your good ideas. You looked carefully at a circle and worked hard to describe it's shape and make connections between circles and things in the world around us.
